YouTube Accounts For 25 Per Cent Of Mobile Network Traffic
Networking equipment expert Sandvine has released its latest internet traffic report, which shows the prevalence to video streaming to mobiles, and the popularity of YouTube in particular.
Sandvine’s Global Internet Phenomena Report is compiled using data drawn from 200 plus customers worldwide, and it found that in North America, video and audio streaming make up over half of mobile data traffic. The leading streaming sources were Pandora, Netflix and YouTube.
YouTube was top of the table, naturally, in all the regions examined: including Europe. It accounted for as much as 25 per cent of network data in some regions, and no less than 12 per cent wherever Sandvine tallied its statistics.
The report also noted that instant messaging applications, such as WhatsApp were enjoying widespread popularity, and cannibalising SMS revenue. This announcement builds on the significant partnerships already secured by O2 Wifi in the past 12 months, enabling millions of people the length and breadth of the UK to access the internet for free whilst on the move.”
Mark Fabes, IT Director, McDonald’s UK said: “When we launched our wifi service in 2007 McDonald’s became the UK’s biggest provider of free wireless internet access. Since then usage has soared, with growing numbers of professionals making use of our restaurant wifi for business meetings and remote working, as well as families and individuals being able to use the network to check emails, shop online or keep up to date with the latest news.”
“Recent figures showed that a staggering 750,000 McDonald’s customers are logging on in our restaurants each month and we are always looking for ways to improve our customer experience. For the 3 million people we serve in our restaurants each day we believe that O2’s mobile expertise and enhanced quality of network connectivity will deliver a fast, safe and secure service for our customers to use when they visit us.”

New member here, although I’ve had o2 phones for over a decade
now.
I have a Samsung Galaxy s2, which is an excellent device in the main, but it keeps losing the mobile network connection so I can’t make or receive calls or txt messages, and it takes a reboot to get it to pick up again, which is something I haven’t encountered before. An upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich has not cured it.
Yesterday was online with an o2 “Guru”, who told me the network in my area was weak. Has apparently logged it with o2 Networks, but didn’t supply a reference number.
1: I’ve never had a signal problem.
2: My wife has an old Sony Ericsson phone on o2 and hasn’t lost signal when I have.
3: The phone should pick up the signal again automatically when I get back into a good signal region. It doesn’t. Only a reboot picks the network up.
For these reasons I have doubts that it is the network. Has anyone else encountered similar issues, and if so how were they resolved?
